How it Works

How Does Online Tutoring Work?

HolladaySchool online tutoring is simple and easy.

HolladaySchool is a online learning environment where math courses are delivered in what we call a math 2.0 environment.

Math 2.0 goes beyond the practical discussion of applying the read/write Web technologies in the classroom. Math 2.0 is a “participatory math” as opposed to an information-source. We have the information but as we work and participate together learning is compounded. Math 2.0 works great for homeschoolers looking for an online math curriculum supported by teachers, tutors and follow students.

Part 1: We use an online learning environment called Moodle.

“Moodle is a course management system (CMS) to help educators create effective online learning communities.” (Quoted from moodle.org) Moodle is not a course or curriculum. It is an easy to use “platform” where users can offer information for teaching and learning. (What is Moodle?)

Everything takes place within moodle. It’s a place where the student will be able to take online tests and quizzes with immediate feedback, watch many hours of videos explaining the concept visually and interact with the tutor (and other students) through forums, chats and whiteboard discusions.

Part 2: Real time live tutoring using VoiceThread (What is VoiceThread?) (group and one-on-one setting)

We may also use Real time live tutoring on the Whiteboard but we prefer VoiceThread Tutoring, it’s more collaborative and you never have to schedule a time to meet.

There are five main areas to this “course”:

  1. VoiceThread Lessons (What is VoiceThread?): This section is where I will put up weekly lessons where all students may attempt to answer the questions together. I will guide the learning with helps, hints and at the end of the week an explanation – if it is not adequately explained as a group.
    • Students can also email their math questions and we can work on them together on a VoiceThread. These questions will be collected into a database so students can review them to receive step-by-step solutions.
  2. Video Lessons: This consists of watching various videos and answering questions after to reinforce what was covered. (track your results in the grade book)
  3. Assessment: There are quizzes and tests to find out which areas need improvement, and also to provide practice for Provincial Achievement Tests. (track your results in the grade book)
  4. Workbook: This is a place where the student will get out their note books and try to follow the lessons and answer the questions.  Jump Math (these are the workbooks we will use, and I highly recommend) “JUMP Math believes that all children can be led to think mathematically, and that with even a modest amount of attention every child will flourish. By demonstrating that even children who are failing math or are labelled as slow learners can excel at math, we hope to dispel the myths that currently prevail. We offer educators and parents complete and balanced materials as well as training to help them reach all students.” (From the JumpMath website)
  5. Math Games: Most interactive math games have a worksheet to go along with them.

There will also be many other resources, websites and games that will be made available to you to enhance and make learning math enjoyable.
